1. (sometimes lowercase) Slang. son of a bitch. 2. Someone who lives South of Broad Street in Charleston,SC.
It is commonly accepted among locals that there are only two neighborhoods in Charleston - north of Broad or south of Broad. Dubose Heyward, author of Porgy defined the difference between north and south of Broad as longing and belonging. If you live north of Broad you long to live south of Broad; if you live south of Broad you can belong to anything you wish.
Less eloquently, most locals would prefer to live south of Broad but cannot afford it, so they are forced to live north of Broad, and soon develop an attitude. They will often describe their neighborhood as slightly north of Broad, leading to the nickname SNOBs. Those who live south of Broad are usually called SOBs.
Charleston is the only city in the world where SNOBs would rather be SOBs.
Mark Jones lives in West Ashley which sits slightly left of Broad Street. He does not mind being called a SLOB.
